The law came through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. The great watershed between the two Testaments was revealed most sharply in the ministry and work of Jesus as he confronted the legalism of the scribes and Pharisees.

The issue of grace and legalism is confronted throughout church history. Paul, faced with the circumcision party, argued for grace. Luther led the way with his break from Rome on the issue of grace. Karl Barth led the break from Protestant liberalism.

The Jesus People, the charismatic renewal and later movements of the Holy Spirit have brought fresh discoveries of grace.
